I'm leading with my drawing for this series so that you can read the verse and see the way it's supposed to look. J's is next down, then Zoo Boy's. The verses for each of these drawings is part of a larger verse about the "Strange Family" which we worked with during 1st grade, the goal at that point was to get the boys experiencing counting-by in their bodies. Now we are working more directly with concept, the verse, and the characters, via the "Missing Diamonds" story (see my post on that from yesterday if you haven't already). So today at the start of our story work, we did just the "counting by one" verse. Then we sat down and drew Father Strange, standing straight and tall, counting his steps one by one. Can you see how Father looks like the number 1? The kids haven't picked up on that yet. Then we wrote the footsteps on the other side of the paper -- numbers 1 through 12. Can you see how these are the answers to the multiplication table for 1? (1 x 1 = 1, 1 x 2 = 2, 1 x 3 = 3, etc) This is how we're gently introducing the times table to the kids. My pictures in this series will be hung in our hallway for the boys to see and study and perhaps make an exciting discovery as our work goes on for these next two weeks.
J's work above, Zoo Boy's below. As anticipated, we had tears and strife from Zoo Boy over doing a led-drawing. I tried to do it as gently as possible, but it clearly wasn't gentle enough. However, his drawing came out great, and he actually wrote 3 whole lines of the verse (which I was shocked about). We'll see how the rest of the week progresses. He feels pretty "done" with the Strange family right now, given that he drew them all yesterday. He was really not happy about having to draw them again.
