first day of "school"

Yesterday was our first day of following our Fall Semester rhythms. We started the day with a rousing bike ride -- beautiful early fall weather, cool in the morning, warm in the afternoon, bright and sunny all day with a light wind. The kids were SO excited to "discover" that it's fall!

After bike riding, the kids had some outdoor playtime while I got things ready indoors for our morning "lesson". Which consisted of a handful of movement activities (some to song, some to verse) targetting various sensory systems, and a curriculum story.

After our focused work (described above), the kids got to do the real "work" of Kindergarteners -- creative play -- while I worked on my own project nearby (today's project was taking down the summer decorations and putting up the autumn) and observe what the kids are up to. J started out dressing up in a rainbow silk and pretending he was "Rainbow Man", a made-up super-hero. He also pretended to be a monster, did a little craft project on his own, and wound up doing some drawing. (The craft and drawings were all of ghosts -- he's excited about Halloween coming, now that it's fall! -- I'll post some photos of his creations when I get a chance.)

Zoo Boy put on a "rock concert" for us, complete with outlandish showmanship. He also joined in the super-hero fun, choosing a blue cape for himself and calling himself "Blue Cape Guy", put on a puppet show about a dolphin that meets a hummingbird, pretended to be a lighthouse keeper, made me buy a stamp and mail a letter at his "post office", and sold items from his "store".

After lunch and rest time, our Afternoon Adventure time was spent at the playground. We'll be doing crafts, baking, and painting during Afternoon Adventures once our year really gets rolling (in addition to playgrounds, playdates, nature hikes, etc). But today was just too nice to not spend the whole afternoon outdoors playing.

So we're off to a good start! Zoo Boy shocked me by actively participating in our movement activities (he tends to be a sit-back-and-watch kind of kid). And the day flowed really nicely, we all had fun, and nobody had any "difficult" moments. I'm excited about everything we've got planned for his fall!

Nit-picking here: You make a couple of references to it being "fall" now, e.g. "early fall weather", "now that it's fall"... I'm sure you know it's still summer. Sure, the start of school often figuratively marks the end of summer, but technically, it's still summer until September 23.

Other than that, great post. Sounds like you all had a great kick-off day.

Actually, even though the calendar says autumn begins with the Equinox at the end of September, weather-wise in this part of the country, Autumn is Sept, Oct, and Nov. We have winter weather Dec, Jan and Feb. Spring March, April and May. And Summer June, July, and August. So we're going with our "reality" of the seasons rather than what the calendar says. This is our Fall Semester of schooling, so for us, it's fall. :-)
