Wind on the water, wild and wise,
Sings the song of the silver seal.
--from "Silkie", a Celtic Fairy Tale, adapted by Enki Education
The kids were SO excited to get back to working on a Language Arts block. It's been since the first half of December! Our story this week was "Silkie", a Celtic Fairy Tale about the Seal People who live in the land of the forever young (Tir Nan Og) and how the Seal Prince fell in love with the Princess of Skye. WONDERFUL story, Zoo Boy in particular was very taken by it and took a very active role in the recall of the story the next day. This first drawing is J's.
Zoo Boy's drawing. The "S" is obvious (the seal), but we were focusing on "W" (in the waves) since we've already introduced "S" with a different story earlier in the year. The boys had no trouble identifying both letters in the drawings. Of note, Zoo Boy very readily wrote his own title on his drawing.
Today we wrote our large "W"s. J's is on top, Zoo Boy's beneath.
Here's J's written verse. He had been doing better about the spacing back in December, but after so much time off from copy work, he'd obviously forgotten. So I just reached over and added "golden stars" after every word he wrote. The actual story verse was another several lines longer, but we used this shortened version so that he could feel successful about easily completely the entire thing. (He'd been tiring out quite a bit with the verse writing at the end of our last block.)
Zoo Boy agreed to write the first letter of each line of the verse, before finishing it out with his usual squiggles. Now that he's six, I figured it's time to start doing some real first grade work. He did not object to the suggestion.
My drawing, which the kids based their on. I think J's actually looks more like a seal than mine....
