swimmer

Swimming lessons (which seriously messed with our nice summer rhythmic groove the past two weeks, due to being held an hour earlier!) ended yesterday There was bad news, and there was good news.

The bad news is that J did not pass Level 2, much to his severe disappointment. According to his instructor, he's got ALL the skills, but not the confidence with going under water. Since Level 3 is held in deep water working on stroke development, she can't pass him with out him being willing to dive right in. Most of J's upset is caused by the fact that swimming lessons are now done for the summer -- he really had his heart set on passing this level, and now won't have that opportunity until next summer.

HOWEVER, the good news (and it's REALLY good news!) is that he IS swimming! Getting his head wet may not be his favorite thing, but the boy is swimming both on his front and on his back and has ditched his life vest entirely (although he'll see that sucker again anytime we go to someone's pool....). He's quite comfortable in the lake without support and is playing water games every day with a group of friends he's made there. It's been quite a summer for the boy, both in skill acquisition and in the social aspect.

So RAH RAH for lake swimming lessons! And a much larger RAH RAH for them being over. Now we can sit back and enjoy the rest of the summer on our own schedule rather than someone else's!

Heck yeah, there was much rejoicing on my part when the four weeks of almost daily swim lessons ended. Ours were at an indoor pool, which meant no place for the baby to crawl around, no place to put her down to help the 5yo change. She and I were a little tired of that routine.

But it IS amazing, what a blitz of swim lessons can do, isn't it? My 7yo is like a totally different kid in the water now.
